Why are regular geared motor inspections crucial?

Geared motors usually work at critical points of the installation: on conveyors, agitators, hoists, in sorting centres or packing lines. Every stoppage means a risk of downtime for the entire line. Systematic inspections make it possible to monitor the condition of bearings, seals, gear wheels and oil, as well as temperature and vibration, so that component replacement can be planned "in advance" instead of reacting only after damage occurs.

As part of the inspections we identify drives at increased risk of failure, recommend repair or modernisation actions and help draw up a work schedule so that it is as unobtrusive to production as possible.

Scope of geared motor inspections at SPEC SERWIS

We carry out geared motor inspections both as one-off service campaigns and as part of ongoing cooperation with plants. The scope of work is adapted to the type of installation, working conditions and customer requirements, but typically includes, among others:

  • examination of geared motors in operation and at standstill (tightness, mountings, condition of covers and couplings, unusual noises, vibration, leaks), temperature verification and basic electrical diagnostics of the motor,
  • checking the oil level and condition (contamination, foaming, discolouration), assessment of play, condition of seals and bearings, vibration measurements and, if necessary, diagnostics using a thermal imaging camera; preparation of a report with recommendations – from adjustments and replacement of operating materials to refurbishment or replacement of the unit.

If necessary we can combine the inspection with dismantling of selected geared motors and their detailed diagnostics in the service workshop, as well as with an immediate oil change or minor on-the-spot repairs carried out right away.

How do we organise inspections at your plant?

Before the first inspection we carry out a short survey of the drive fleet: we identify the key geared motors, their working conditions and technological constraints (access, possible stoppages). On this basis we prepare a maintenance schedule – one-off or cyclical – linked to the production schedule.

What do we do?

  • we agree the list of drives covered by the inspection, the available downtime windows and health and safety requirements,
  • we carry out the inspection at the agreed time (at the customer's site) and, once finished, provide a report with action priorities: which geared motors require intervention "immediately", which should be scheduled for repair/refurbishment, and which only need re-checking at the next inspection.

Documentation, reports and recommendations after the inspection

We conclude every inspection with clear documentation – so that the maintenance department can quickly make investment and service decisions. The report includes, among other things, a list of the geared motors checked, a description of their technical condition, an indication of potential risks and a recommended action plan (including proposals for further levels of inspections and possible modernisations).

At the customer's request we can help translate the inspection results into concrete actions: prepare a parts list, plan stoppages and also combine inspections with cyclical oil changes, which further simplifies work organisation.

How often should geared motor inspections be carried out?

The frequency of inspections depends on the working conditions (continuous/intermittent, loads, temperature, dust, humidity) and the criticality of the installation. In practice, for most plants we recommend inspections every 6–12 months, with drives critical to production continuity checked more often. We agree the schedule individually after reviewing your installation.

Do you carry out inspections at the customer's site?

Yes, as standard we perform inspections on site at the plant – without the need to send the geared motors away. We repair minor faults on the spot in our mobile workshop. If, during the inspection, it turns out that a drive requires dismantling and detailed workshop diagnostics, we organise safe transport and further service work.

What should be prepared before a geared motor inspection?

The key is to provide access to the drives (including platforms, hoists, work-at-height permits if required) and to plan the necessary line stoppages. Also helpful are: up-to-date technical documentation, a list of critical drives and information about recent failures. On this basis we can better target the scope of the inspection.

Can minor repairs be carried out immediately during the inspection?

In many cases, yes. If we agree such a scenario in advance, we can combine the inspection with minor service work – e.g. adjustment, replacement of seals or oil – which reduces the number of separate stoppages. More serious repairs or refurbishments are carried out under the Geared Motor Service, usually on the basis of the findings from the inspection performed.
