NORD geared motor with the gear unit, motor and frequency inverter name plates marked

A drive failure can bring an entire production line to a standstill. With NORD systems, many faults can be diagnosed quickly, and sometimes even rectified on your own. This guide shows when you can act in DIY mode and when it is better to call SPEC SERWIS straight away – an authorised partner and technical backbone for NORD drives in Poland.

The most common causes of NORD geared motor failures

In service practice the same scenarios keep recurring. Quick recognition of the symptoms makes it possible to limit downtime and costs.

  • Lack of or degraded gear oil – overheating, noise, accelerated bearing wear.
  • Incorrect installation position – no venting or the wrong oil level (the installation position is marked on the name plate).
  • Mechanical overload – too high a torque, a blocked conveyor, an incorrectly selected gear ratio.
  • Electrical problems – voltage drops, wrong frequency inverter parameters, damaged connectors.
  • Wear of wearing parts – shaft seals, bearings, brake.

What you can check yourself (DIY mode)

If the drive is not mechanically damaged and the symptoms are mild, carry out basic fault diagnosis:

  1. Name plate – check the type, installation position, oil type and limit temperatures.
  2. Oil condition – leaks, smell, colour; make sure the breather is clear.
  3. Operating temperature – an unnatural rise usually indicates overload or a lubrication problem.
  4. Electrical connections – loose connectors and shielding can generate frequency inverter errors.
  5. Application load – check whether the conveyor/device is not running “against a blockage”.

Important: if the symptoms do not disappear after these steps – continued operation risks more serious damage!

When not to take risks and call SPEC SERWIS straight away

There are situations in which continuing operation increases the cost of repair. Get in touch with SPEC SERWIS when:

  • you can hear metallic knocking or there is a sudden rise in temperature,
  • there has been flooding, a mechanical collision or operation without oil,
  • the frequency inverter reports recurring errors despite a reset,
  • the drive operates in a critical application (continuous production).

SPEC SERWIS does not sell “blindly”it helps select the solution, supports contact with NORD, has direct access to parts and responds with an emergency service.

NORD frequency inverter error codes – what they mean in practice

The NORD Drive Systems drive electronics signals faults with clear messages. The most common groups:

  • Overcurrent / Overload – mechanical overload, too short a ramp time, application blockage.
  • Overvoltage / Undervoltage – unstable power supply, incorrect braking, regenerative energy.
  • Overtemperature – dirty cooling, too high an ambient temperature, overload.
  • Motor fault – incorrect motor parameters, winding break, encoder error (if fitted).
  • Communication fault – bus problems (PROFINET/EtherNet/IP), shielding, addressing.

A reset is not a solution. If the error returns, an analysis of the parameters, the application and the selection is needed.

How SPEC SERWIS resolves NORD drive failures

We work methodically, shortening downtime:

  • Initial diagnosis (also remote): error codes, parameters, application symptoms.
  • Mechanical assessment: oil, seals, bearings, brake, installation position.
  • Frequency inverter parameterisation: ramps, protections, matching to the load.
  • Access to original parts and fast logistics.
  • Design support – correction of the selection so that the problem does not return.

If you have any doubts, write to us!

Simple faults can be detected on your own, but ignoring the signals ends in a costly repair. When in doubt – it is better to involve SPEC SERWIS straight away and restore production without risk.

FAQs – our customers' most common questions

Below we have gathered the answers most often given in the event of NORD drive failures. If you do not find your case here, contact us – we will suggest the right direction.

Can I keep working if the frequency inverter reports a sporadic error?

No. A recurring error is a warning signal. Continuing operation usually worsens the condition of the mechanics or the electronics.

How often should the oil in a NORD geared motor be changed?

In accordance with the operating manual and the operating conditions (temperature, load, position). An incorrect oil change time shortens the service life of the gear unit.

Does changing the installation position matter?

Yes. The installation position affects lubrication and venting. The wrong configuration leads to overheating.

Does SPEC SERWIS deal with selection and consultancy?

Yes. SPEC SERWIS provides advisory support, helps select the drive and handles contact with NORD – this is often the fastest route to a lasting solution.
